The Ledge

Mother is it safe to
Go outside and play yet
I miss all my friends and
I don't want to stay in
I remember when I went to school all day
And when it was ok to be holding hands
Something's gone awry and all the mice and men
Are scrambling from ruins of best-laid plans
When can we go back
And where does this end
Or does it end?
You will pay the price for things that your fathers have done
There is little left to say the spider web spun
Your parents they ate sour grapes
Your teeth are set on edge
As we go tumbling half-way blind
And trip and fall
And lose it all
Go right over
The ledge
and down down
Mother is it safe to
Sit close to the window
When can we go out and
See the world that I knew
Once upon a time they told a tale that all was fine
And now we're learning it's all a lie
Best to look away and watch the shadows on the wall
Cause there is no way to rectify
When can we go back
And where does it end
Or does it end?
There's no way to know
Where this will lead
Where things will go
Where we will be
No way to hide
From the landslide
You will pay the price for things that your fathers have done
There is little left to say the spider web spun
Your parents they ate sour grapes
Your teeth are set on edge
As we go tumbling half-way blind
And trip and fall
And lose it all
Go right over
The ledge
and down down
All fall down down
Mother are you there still?
I can't hear you breathing
The city is deserted
Everyone is leaving
You will pay the price for things that your fathers have done
There is little left to say the spider web spun
Your parents they ate sour grapes
Your teeth are set on edge
As we go tumbling half-way blind
And trip and fall
And lose it all
Go right over
The ledge
and down down
We all fall down down
Written under NYC lockdown in March 2020, this is my COVID quarantine song, but it goes beyond that to a general dystopia or place devastated by war. As always, children pay for the mistakes of those that came before them (sour grapes, teeth, etc. from Ezekiel 18). This song doesn't adhere as closely to the themes of Expecting Different Results, other than that the COVID pandemic, and a lot of what went down in 2020, was not what most people were expecting.
