No Expectations

No expectations that you'd know
But I thought maybe you'd suspect
Desires just to hold
A bond you would reject
No expectations that you'd come
Though my door was open wide
I'd have taken a few crumbs
With you I never had much pride
If you come back
Then we should get together
You said for sure
So I lie to myself
That you are someone else
Who'd want that old detour
Who we were back in the day
It doesn't matter anyway
No expectations that you'd call
Though I wanted all the same
I'm sure it never crossed your mind
To even mention my name
No expectations that you'd be
Though I kept up the pretense
That we are still who we were
Well the past we must dispense
If you come back
Then we should get together
You said for sure
So I lie to myself
That you are someone else
Who'd want that old detour
Who we were back in the day
It doesn't matter anyway
I keep holding on
I keep holding on
I keep holding on
…
to nothing at all
There's nothing at all
To hold to
If you come back
Then we should get together
You said for sure
So I lie to myself
That you are someone else
Connections fray over time; that is just how life goes. Distance and time together deal a lethal blow to bonds that weren't that strong to begin with. Ultimately, there is only so much time and only so many people you can prioritize in life, and some folks will inevitably not make the cut. Hurts all the same.
